phone: 04 566 2645 or email:

All those who are listed in this Squad by the date of the trial (see below) will be deemed to have already nominated themseleves for selection, as per the NZOF Selection Policy, 2.3.1.

To be eligible for selection in the WOC MTBO team a person must be a member of a New Zealand club. You will be a need to hold a New Zealand passport.

Selection race/trial

The National Championships, to be held at Waiuku on 3 and 4 July 2004, have been nominated as the trial. The trial will have two components: a long distance and a middle distance race.

(Please note that while the NZOF Selection Policy requires the announcement of a trial for a WOC team to be not less than six months beforehand, the NZOF Council has approved a relaxation to the policy, in this instance, such that the announcement is required not less than six weeks beforehand.)

World MTBO team selection

A team of up to six men and six women will be selected to participate in the long distance, middle distance and relay events following the trial. It is important to note that people will not be selected just to make up a team of six.

Performance in individual disciplines is important will be considered as the best prospects for each discipline are sought, and different skills are required.

While performance in the trail will be the principal criterion for selection, regard to other performances will be made, if and where necessary. To be considered such performances need to have been achieved or be achieved in open classes, not age-restricted classes. These performances may include the ANZ Challenge held September 2003, any Australian events and any regional New Zealand events or international events, especially those events where several squad members competed.

Injury or illness may be considered but we need to know in advance of any circumstances. Medical confirmation may be needed from a doctor aware of the situation and importance of the event. Similarly consideration may also be given to gear failures.

The selectors consider and recognise that the best results will be obtained when a team works together so a person’s contribution to a team environment is a secondary consideration. Advisory panel members (or the NZOF Selection Panel) present at events may be observing behaviour. The team is also expected to be able to attend for the full two weeks although a dispensation may be granted. It is envisage that the team will live and train together once in Ballarat.
