NZOF NEWS - February 2010
A belated Happy New Year! And the orienteering year is already in full swing with summer events around the country, an innovative sprint series held in the Hawkes Bay, a D Squad training camp, JWOC trials. Don't forget it's not long to the Nationals, so get your entries done now!
ANOTHER RECORD YEARDespite an apparent economic recession, more people than ever before went orienteering last year and overall membership of clubs managed to survive the money crunch. Full details will be in NZOF's Annual Report which will be sent to clubs in March.
NZOF WEBSITEAfter a too-long period of inactivity, work has commenced getting information on NZOF's website up to date and current. Hopefully by the time many of you read this the bulk of the changes will have been made. Thanks to Jack Vincent (HB) who has been the one doing all this work.
CHANGE OF NAMEAt their AGM, Hamilton OC have changed their name to Orienteering Waikato. Event organisers should note that the official abbreviation to use for entries / results is WK (seems a better choice than OW).
O-RINGEN ACADEMYEach year before O-Ringen a training camp is offered aimed at juniors from outside Scandinavia, and is especially useful for first-time O-Ringen participants. This year, the organisers are also offering a veteran's camp. The catch is you need to pay for the costs yourselves, but anyone interested is welcome to contact me for details.
TWITTERINGMick Finn has set up accounts for the National Squad and Superseries, with the idea of trialling immediate results by cellphone at major events, as well as other information. For those into tweeting, go to http://twitter.com/NZOrientSquad and http://twitter.com/NZOSuperseries
CONGRATULATIONSTo Angela Simpson (RO) who has been awarded a Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship at the University of Waikato, following in the footsteps of Simon Addison and Sam McNally. NZOF receives a call for applications for these in July, so any Year 13 student who believes they have both the academic and sporting credentials to apply are welcome to contact me.
To Jenni Adams and Carsten Jørgensen (PP) on the birth of their daughter Torun last November. Which reminds me, another potential orienteering superstar called Adam arrived last year courtesy of Al Landels (AK) and former French champion Juliette Soulard. That's probably one-sixth of the 2029 JWOC team sorted.
